Sky Digital TV

Sky Digital TV has been around for a while now, and it is easily the leader in the digital television field.  In fact, Sky TV is so well known that the name is used by many people to refer to any sort of satellite broadcasting, just like ‘Hoover’ is used when people mean a generic vacuum cleaner.

People often ask about the boxes that are needed in order to be able to watch Sky digital.  There is no real mystery about them though, and in fact users have a choice of three types of digital TV box.

Standard Sky box – this provides the standard definition TV, and is the entry level technology.  It has all the standard features that you expect from Sky, such as pausing live TV and a series link feature which allows the user to set up the recording of a whole TV series with just one press of a button.  As with all, Sky+HD Box the content you receive can be tailored to your needs so that you can just receive the basic package or add extras to it, like Sky Supertelly.

Sky+HD – This is really at the forefront of current technology.  HD means ‘High Definition’, and it provides a step up in picture quality from the standard set.  Picture images can have up to 5 times more detail than standard, and colours appear much more vivid on your screen.  As well as the usual features like series link and pause / rewind live TV, this box has more storage for you to record even more of your favourite programmes.  This type of box allows you to watch both standard and Sky+HD Channels on your tv – without it, you can only watch standard programmes.  As well as the HD box, you will also need to have a television which is capable of showing high definition images, though increasingly television manufacturers are making televisions capable of this.

Multiroom – Another innovative idea, this lets you view Sky TV in two or more rooms at the same time.  This means that family members can watch their favourite programmes in peace, with no more arguing over who has control of the TV.  Choosing this option requires an additional box for each room, and a multiroom subscription is required for each extra box, but the cost of this much less than a standard subscription.

Once you have decided which box type suits you, you just need to place an order for installation.  A Sky engineer will be booked in for a convenient time, and will install the dish to pick up the signal, the Sky box itself and will even connect it all up to your TV and show you how to work it.
